Butoh Bar is an event to promote Butoh to a wide range of people.
This is an event to introduce people to Butoh, which was born in Japan in the 1960s, spread throughout the world in the 1980s, and is now recognized as Butoh throughout the world, with Butoh festivals being held all over the world.
This is an event where you can enjoy food, drink, and conversation while watching, experiencing, listening to, and taking photos of Butoh.
Please feel free to come and experience the world of Butoh.
1960年代に日本で生まれ、1980年代に世界中に広がり、今では世界中でButohとして認知され、世界中で舞踏フェスティバルが開催されている「舞踏」を知ってもらう為のイベントです。
飲食やお喋りを楽しみながら、舞踏を見たり、体験してみたり、話しを聞いたり、写真を撮ったりと盛りだくさんな内容のイベントです。

Butoh was born in the 1960s
Butoh was born in the 1960s as “Ankoku Butoh” which means darkness dance.
This period was a time of upheaval centering on the Security Treaty struggle between the United States and Japan, and it can be said that this dance was born from the critical viewpoint of “what is Japanese dance” amidst the rapid penetration of Western culture into postwar Japan.
Butoh was supported by Yukio Mishima, Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, Genpei Akasegawa, Juro Kara, and other cultural figures of the time, and it aroused enthusiasm among young people.
Butoh is more strongly connected to various arts such as fine arts, literature, photography, film, music, and theater than it is to the dance industry, and a variety of collaborations have been born.
Butoh has also surprised viewers by expanding beyond the stage into television and film.
Various Butoh troupes emerged, including Dairakudakan, Sankai Juku, Byakkosha, and Hoppou Butoh ha, some of which toured the world.
舞踏は1960年代に「暗黒舞踏」として誕生しました。
この時期は、安保闘争を中心とした激動の時代であり、戦後の日本に西洋文化が急速に浸透する中で「日本人の踊りとは何か」という批評的な視点から生まれた踊りであったと言えます。
時の文化人である三島由紀夫をはじめ、澁澤龍彦、赤瀬川原平、唐十郎などの支持をうけ、若者を中心に熱狂を巻き起こしました。
舞踏はダンス業界の評価よりも、美術、文学、写真、映像、音楽、演劇など多様な芸術との結びつきが強く、様々なコラボレーションが生まれました。
さらに舞台にとどまらず、テレビや映画にも進出し、観る者を驚かせました。
大駱駝艦、山海塾、白虎社、北方舞踏派など、さまざまな舞踏団が誕生し、その中には世界ツアーを実施する舞踏団も登場しました。
Butoh in the World
Kazuo Ohno and Sankai Juku were greeted with amazement around the world, and as Butoh dancers began to expand overseas one after another, Ankoku Butoh became widely recognized as “Butoh.
While the reputation of Butoh continues to grow overseas, France awarded the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres to the leader of Sankai Juku, Mr. Ushio Tenji, in 2015.
Similarly, the name “Butoh” began to take root in Japan, and Butoh expanded its range of expression and developed into a variety of styles.
However, while Butoh was gaining worldwide recognition and spreading, Butoh gradually lost momentum in Japan due to the death of Tatsumi Hijikata and the arrival of the contemporary dance boom.
大野一雄や山海塾は、世界中で驚きをもって迎えられ、舞踏家たちが次々と海外に進出する中で、暗黒舞踏は「Butoh」として広く認知されるようになりました。
海外での評価は高まる一方で、フランスでは2015年に「山海塾」主宰者の天児牛大さんに芸術文化勲章コマンドールを授与しています。
同様に、日本国内でも舞踏という名称が定着していき、舞踏はその表現の幅を広げ、さまざまなスタイルが展開されることになります。
しかし、世界での評価が高まり、舞踏の広がりが見られる一方で、日本国内では土方巽の死去やコンテンポラリーダンスブームの到来などが影響し、舞踏は徐々に勢いを失っていきます。
Butoh in Hokkaido
In Hokkaido, the Hoppou Butoh ha was based in Otaru in the 1980s.
At the time, their base, Uminekoya, was a centre of northern culture, and became the model for many books and films, including Tomomi Muramatsu’s Uminekoya no Kyaku (The Guests of Uminekoya) and Takiji Kobayashi’s The Absentee Landowner.
Later, Hoppou Butoh ha had to leave Hokkaido and Otaru’s Butoh scene shrank in size..
In 2012, CONTE-SAPPORO was established as a dance centre focusing on contemporary dance and Butoh, and from there various events and performances were developed to promote Butoh again.
In 2017, the Hokkaido Butoh Festival began, bringing together Butoh artists from Japan and abroad, and toured various cities in Hokkaido.
From 2025, under the name Sapporo Butoh Kaiwai, the legendary Butoh BAR from 2012 will be held again in order to promote the appeal of Butoh to a wider audience.
北海道では1980年代に北方舞踏派が小樽を拠点に活動していました。
当時拠点にしていた海猫屋は、村松友視著「海猫屋の客」、小林多喜二「不在地主」など、多くの著書や映画のモデルになるほどの北の文化の発信地でした。
その後、北方舞踏派は北海道を離れることになり、また国内の舞踏シーンの縮小もあって、活動を継続されている方はいらっしゃいましたが、当時と比べると少しずつ規模は縮小していきました。
2012年にCONTE-SAPPOROがコンテンポラリーダンスと舞踏を中心としたダンスセンターとして設立され、そこから舞踏を再度普及するべく様々なイベントや公演を展開していきます。
2017年には国内外の舞踏家を集めて北海道舞踏フェスティバルがはじまり、道内の各都市をツアーして周りました。
そして2025年から、札幌舞踏界隈という名称を掲げて、より多くの方に舞踏の魅力を発信すべく、2012年の伝説的な企画でもある舞踏BARをいまいちど始めていきます。
